Ronald S. Cortez
Chief Financial Officer
Vice Chancellor, Division of Finance and Administration
Ronald Cortez joined UCI in February 2017 as vice chancellor of Administrative & Business Services; and in February of 2018 he became chief financial officer and vice chancellor for the Division of Finance and Administration. He oversees an operational budget of approximately $140 million and provides strategic direction for the campus’s business operations and capital projects.
Ron brings more than two decades of public sector administrative and financial experience. He previously served as vice president of Administration & Finance and chief financial officer for San Francisco State University, associate vice chancellor for Administrative Services at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and worked for the county of Santa Barbara for fourteen years, three of which he served as the deputy county executive officer. His work has focused on the management of multi-million dollar budgets; large, complex government information systems, developing and implementing capital projects, including overseeing the construction of over twelve public building projects. He also oversaw the creation and implementation of a new financial system, eProcurement, timekeeping, risk management, liability systems, and sustainability projects.
Ron was selected to be the 2017 commencement speaker for the Bishop Diego High School. He has served as a Board of Trustee member for Bishop Garcia Diego High School, and in 2016, was awarded the Public Service Award from the Public Administration Faculty for his contribution to the San Francisco community. He is a mentor for the Western Association of College and Business Officers and sits on the Research Council for the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
Ron earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) at the Santa Barbara College of Law and received a master’s degree in organizational management and public administration at Fielding Graduate University and Northern Michigan University, respectively. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from San Jose State University. He served eight years as a captain in the United States Air Force as a navigator on a Boeing 707.

Mary Clark plays a critical support role in strategic planning and provides administrative leadership on Division of Finance and Administration and/or UCI initiatives, including the design and management of projects and programs that are integral to UCI’s financial health, academic excellence, and productivity. She has nearly 25 years of experience in higher education at universities in the United States and Europe. Mary served as the chief of operations for the Division of Administration & Finance at California State University, Fullerton; eight years at UCI's Paul Merage School of Business as director and then assistant dean; and prior to her tenure at UCI, Mary was at Washington University in St. Louis, IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, and Chapman University. Mary holds an executive MBA degree from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a minor in business administration from California State University, Fullerton.
David R. Ott
Executive Director, Support Services
Division of Finance and Administration
David Ott is responsible for centralizing a support service delivery model for the Division of Finance and Administration business processes, human resources processes, and budget and financial processes. He has over 35 years in the public service industry where he served as a special consultant to the vice president and chief financial officer of Administration and Finance at San Francisco State University, interim assistant city manager for San Juan Capistrano, city manager for Solana Beach, and director of the Solana Beach Redevelopment Agency. He also held the position of fire chief for the cities of Solana Beach and Del Mar where he was responsible for managing and directing the fire department and emergency preparedness personnel and all department operations. He holds a Master of Arts in executive management leadership from Grand Canyon University, Master of Arts in management - human resource management from the University of Redlands, and Bachelor of Science degree in fire administration and fire prevention, both from Cogswell Polytechnical College.

Kelly Kadlec is passionate about three things—building relationships, organizing thought, and checking things off lists. As the director of strategy, Kelly has the privilege of collaborating with colleagues to shape and guide a culture of organizational effectiveness in support of UCI’s strategic plan. Kelly has spent the past two decades on a university campus. At UCI she served as chief of staff to the CFO and vice chancellor of planning and budget and as a senior research analyst in the Division of Undergraduate Education. At the University of Southern California she was an assistant professor (of research) in psychology and received postdoctoral training in quantitative psychology. She earned a Ph.D. in social psychology and a post-baccalaureate certificate in women’s and gender studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a B.S. in psychology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
Richard L. Coulon
Associate Vice Chancellor

Richard Coulon is the associate vice chancellor for the Division of Finance and Administration. He has been with UCI for over 17 years starting his university career as Risk Management Coordinator and worked his way up to Director of Procurement and Risk Services before taking on his current position. Rick received his Bachelors of Science degree from California State University, Long Beach and later earned the professional designation of Associate in Risk Management (ARM) from the Insurance Institute of America. Rick is a state certified mediator and serves on numerous committees and is co-manager of the UCI Emergency Operations Center.
Karl S. Wolonsky
Associate Vice Chancellor of Environmental and Facilities Services
Environmental Health & Safety
Karl Wolonsky is responsible for overseeing the effective operation of campus buildings, trades and construction services, grounds and utilities. Karl has over 38 years of service at UCI as assistant dean for the School of Physical Sciences prior to recently assuming the position of assistant vice chancellor. Karl earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of New Mexico where he also served as the first administrator for the New Mexico’s State Medical Examiner’s Office.
Assistant Vice Chancellor and Controller
Accounting & Fiscal Services
John Geraghty joined UCI in August of 2018 as assistant vice chancellor and controller of Accounting and Fiscal services. Geraghty provides management and oversight for the operations, activities, and programs of the campus Accounting & Fiscal Services department, and is responsible for the development and implementation of a campuswide system of internal controls, ensuring accountability is maintained for the financial resources of UCI and will partner directly with campus financial managers to implement university and campus financial policies and procedures. John has over 25 years of experience in multiple industries and a proven track record of designing and executing financial reporting systems, is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from California State University, Northridge.
Janet C. Mason
Assistant Vice Chancellor of Capital Planning and Space Management
Capital Planning and Space Management
Janet Mason is responsible for overseeing the planning of new building projects and major renovations, administering the Small Capital Improvement Program, developing project approval documents for State and Regental review, developing the ten-year Capital Financial Plan, supporting campus decision-making regarding the use of on- and off-campus space, and maintaining UCI’s facilities inventory database. Janet has been with UCI for 38 years, beginning in Public Policy Research Organization and moving to the planning office several years later. During her tenure, Janet has been in involved in planning most of the new facilities that have been constructed on campus since the mid-1980s. Janet graduated from Adelphi University with the degree in experimental psychology.
Brian J. Pratt
Assistant Vice Chancellor and Campus Architect
Design and Construction Services
Brian Pratt oversees major academic building projects, research facilities, and housing projects. He leads Design and Construction's efforts for the campus, delivering highly complex projects via design build. Brian has served in the private and public sectors, formerly leading the Orange County Architecture Discipline as a Principal with AECOM. Brian has recently led a variety of project types, including laboratories, sports facilities, retail, cultural, and civic, both new and renovation. Past clients include the Arizona Cardinals, University of Arkansas, Pomona College, UCSD, UCLA, CSUF, UCSB and UCR. Brian’s work has been recognized with several awards and recognitions and many projects have achieved various levels of LEED certification.
Assistant Vice Chancellor
Institutional Research & Decision Support
Ryan Cherland has been working in institutional research for over 30 years, joining UCI in 2012. In his current role, he manages a team working on a comprehensive program of institutional research, reporting and analysis to support campus academic and enrollment planning, program assessment, and decision making. His principal professional areas include enrollment modeling, institutional and academic program management, and ways to convey useful comparative information to decision makers. Ryan has a PhD in Higher Education Administration with a minor emphasis in Educational Psychology and Research from the University of Kansas.
Interim Police Chief
UC Irvine Police Department
Interim Chief Cooper came to UCI in February 2018 and has over 33 years of police experience. He started his police career at Claremont Colleges where he was the Senior Campus Safety Officer. In 2006, Assistant Chief Cooper was appointed Claremont’s Chief of Police. He is credited with significantly enhancing community engagement and volunteer services, increasing the department’s technological capabilities, and implementing the City’s Mobile Emergency Operations Center. During his career at Claremont Police Department he worked assignments in reserves, patrol, traffic, detectives, recruitment, backgrounds & training, and administration. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from the Union Institute and University. He is a graduate of the POST Command College (class 36) and the POST Executive Development Course.
Michael P. Bathke
Internal Audit Services
Mike Bathke leads a staff of nine professional auditors with operations and offices at the campus and medical center. In 2010, Mike served a temporary role in Accounting and Financial Services as the Interim Director of Internal Controls and General Accounting. Mike previously worked as an internal audit and accounting/financial consultant at Jefferson Wells (now Experis), an international professional services organization. Mike graduated from California State University, Los Angeles, with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and holds three professional certifications.
